Beximco workers block Dhaka-Tangail highway for arrears

Workers of Beximco Industrial Park in Sarabo area of Gazipur’s Kashimpur today blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway, demanding payment of outstanding salaries for October.
They blocked Chakraborty intersection around 9:52am, halting traffic movement on both sides of the highway, said Rafiqul Islam, a sub-inspector of Gazipur Industrial Police.
According to the protesting workers, they are facing extreme financial crises due to the delayed payments and have informed the authorities of their hardships. They took to the streets as the authorities took no effective action to solve the problem, they said.
As per sources at the factory, the authorities have promised to clear the dues by November. But the workers have not agreed to wait till then.
Attempts to contact Beximco Industrial Park authorities over phone were unsuccessful.
Traffic ground to a halt on both sides of the highway, starting from Jirani to Square area. The situation remains unchanged till the filing of this report around 11:30am.
